The question of how we address the fact that undocumented immigrants have broken the law is very challenging for many Christians. From a legal perspective, it's pretty clear that to be here without authorization is illegal. While most of us violate the law at some point--speeding, for example, or (at least in my state) talking on our cell phones while driving on rare occasion in places where that's not allowed--that does not excuse us from the biblical principle in Romans 13 that we should submit to the governing authorities. At the same time, there may be times when "we must obey God rather than human beings" (Acts 5:29), and I think that migrating illegally to provide for one's family is a better justification than I have for speeding down the highway.
What do you think about the legal question? As Christians, how can we reconcile the commands to obey the law with the commands to welcome the stranger?
